Microsoft Must Stop Profiting Off the Cruelty of ICE

As thousands of children remain separated from their families and caregivers as a result of the Trump administration’s dehumanizing “zero tolerance” policy, a number of major corporations are sitting back, watching the money roll in.

Microsoft is one of those companies, with a $19.4 million contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency responsible for family separations. In fact, the company has publicly celebrated the way ICE is using its cloud-based services, called "Azure," which include “deep learning capabilities to accelerate facial recognition and identification.”

But we don’t think helping ICE detain and criminalize immigrants is worth celebrating. We demand Microsoft and others stop profiting off the cruelty of ICE.

After public upheaval regarding the brutality at the border, Microsoft has issued a statement denying responsibility and supporting keeping families together. But immigrants of color are still being detained by ICE and kept in camps - and companies like Microsoft are still getting paid for their role in helping make this happen.

Companies still profiting off ICE’s dehumanization must do more. They must acknowledge how their products and services have been used by the Trump administration to forcibly isolate children of color and to put many in situations where they may never see their loved ones again. Any company participating in any part of ICE’s operations is equally as guilty.

Sign the petition: Tell Microsoft to do their part to #AbolishICE!

Below is the letter we will send Satya Nadella at Microsoft, and other companies profiting off ICE:

Dear Satya Nadella,

It's time Microsoft and other major corporations cancelled their contracts with the Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE) agency. Your company has a responsibility to ensure that your products are not being used to violate human rights.

In your own words, Microsoft’s Azure cloud system, enables ICE “to process data on edge devices or utilize deep learning capabilities to accelerate facial recognition and identification.” It’s time to stop being complicit in the dehumanization of people seeking safety in this country, including children. With your actions you have an opportunity to take a stand and urge the Trump administration to change their brutal policies.

You must cancel your contract and help #AbolishICE immediately.
